For over 950 years, the Benedictine Abbey of St. Lambrecht has not only shaped the townscape of this beautiful nature park community, but also the people in and around this place.
Visitor Options:
In addition to the Gothic abbey church and the Romanesque ossuary, which are always open during the day, the abbey museum’s extensive collections offer an interesting glimpse into the Benedictine abbey’s history spanning over 950 years.
The museum is accessible to visitors as part of guided tours.
The exhibition in the museum’s foyer provides an overview of the abbey’s history, its current missions, and its operations, and explains the most important aspects of Benedictine spirituality and monastic life.
To mark the abbey’s 950th anniversary, a large part of the abbey museum was comprehensively redesigned. The new exhibition places the age-old yet ever-relevant question “What is a human being?” at the center of the presentations, inviting visitors to reflect on their own lives through the lens of these unique works of art. On display are artifacts from nearly every era since the monastery’s founding, ranging from remnants of Romanesque and Gothic furnishings from various churches to Baroque statues and paintings.
A large-scale model of the monastery complex, the liturgical treasury, a glimpse into the Prelates’ Hall with its portraits of benefactors and abbots, and the Baroque nativity scene are further highlights of the tour.
The extended tour also offers insights into Father Romuald Pramberger’s Folklore Museum and Father Basius Hanf’s Bird Museum.
Father Romuald Pramberger’s Folklore Collection, assembled at the beginning of the 20th century, displays objects from the daily lives of farmers and artisans of bygone eras.
Finally, the famous Bird Museum of Father Blasius Hanf (1808–1892) showcases the diverse bird life around the Furtnerteich through approximately 600 specimens representing 259 different species.
Guided tours are offered daily from May 15 through October 15 (for groups of 5 or more) at 10:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. On Sundays and holidays, tours take place immediately after the church service and at 2:30 p.m.
Abbey tours during the fall and winter breaks:
Tuesdays and Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. (on public holidays: after the church service)
Meeting point for tours: in the museum courtyard (turn right after the abbey gate)
Groups of 10 or more can also be guided outside these times by prior arrangement.
