Sulzkaralm via Neuberg

Hotel Neubergerhof in Filzmoos-Neuberg is an ideal starting point for this beautiful hike. If you are arriving by the Fidibus Summer (hiking bus), you can conveniently begin your hike directly at the hotel. From the hotel, first follow the pleasant walking path towards Langegghof. The path begins opposite Fritzlehenhof and takes you through the idyllic landscape of Neuberg. Right from the start, you can enjoy the peaceful surroundings and beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. Once you reach Langegghof, leave the walking path and follow the road downhill. Stay on the road until you reach a gravel track. Turn left there and continue your hike towards Kohlegghof. Shortening the route by car: If you would like to shorten the hike, you can drive your own car to the area shortly before the first barrier after Kohleggbauer, or park in front of Voglerbauer. This allows you to skip the entire first section of the route from the hotel via Langegghof, Knablhof and Kohlegghof. From your starting point at Voglerhof or at the barrier, the actual ascent towards Sulzkaralm now begins. Follow the forest road steadily uphill. The path leads through the forest and, as you gain altitude, increasingly opens up to beautiful views. Gradually, you leave the valley behind and enter the alpine landscape around Arzbergalm. The forest road initially leads past Arzbergalm. The alpine pasture is situated at around 1,350 metres above sea level and is a lovely place to stop for a short rest. After Arzbergalm, continue along the forest road for a short while. Shortly after Arzbergalm, after passing through a gate, a narrower hiking trail branches off to the right. Pay close attention here so that you do not miss the turn-off. Take this hiking trail and follow it through the alpine landscape. The narrow path continues uphill, or along the slope, until you eventually reach the forest road again. From here, continue along the forest road. Follow the route all the way to your destination, Sulzkaralm. Once you arrive at Sulzkaralm, you can enjoy a well-deserved break. After the ascent, this is the perfect place to take in the tranquillity of the mountain landscape and enjoy the views of the surrounding peaks.

For the return journey, you will follow largely the same route. From Sulzkaralm, first take the forest road back towards Arzbergalm. Unlike on the way up, however, stay on the forest road for the entire return journey. Do not take the narrow hiking trail at the Kirchgasshütte-Aualm junction again; instead, continue downhill along the forest road. This makes navigation on the way back particularly easy. You will pass Arzbergalm again and then continue downhill along the forest road towards the area around Kohlegghof. From there, continue towards Knablhof. At Knablhof, follow the same route as on the way there and continue towards Langegghof. At Langegghof, take the walking path opposite Fritzlehenhof. This path leads you through the idyllic landscape back to Hotel Neubergerhof, where your hike comes to an end.

Please note: The length of the tour can vary considerably depending on your chosen starting point. If you start directly at Hotel Neubergerhof, you will have the additional section via Langegghof, Knablhof and Kohlegghof. Driving by car to the area before the first barrier allows you to shorten this section accordingly.

Weather changes, rapid temperature drops, thunderstorms, wind, fog, and snowfields are objective dangers and require the right behavior on the way. Hut keepers are experienced mountain experts and can give good tips about the weather and the route. Inadequate equipment, overestimation of oneself, carelessness, poor fitness, and wrong assessment can lead to critical situations.In case of thunderstorms: absolutely avoid peaks, ridge areas, and fixed ropes.

A good backpack is helpful, and on alpine routes, a hat, gloves, a good jacket, and pants are basic equipment. Good waterproof shoes, sunglasses, sun protection, and enough drinks are essential. Flashlight, maps, knife, and a small first aid kit also belong to the essentials.

Available GPS data – like hiking maps – are only an orientation aid, as they can never represent an exact image or the level of detail of a route in reality. Especially at danger spots, the final decision on the further route must always be made based on local conditions.

From Eben:

Take the A10 Tauern Motorway and exit at Eben. Turn left towards Filzmoos. After approximately 7 km, turn off at the junction signposted for Neuberg. Follow the road until you reach the Knablhof junction, where you turn right. At the next junction, turn left. Continue past Kohlegghof until you reach the first barrier. A free parking area is located just before the barrier.

From Ramsau am Dachstein:

At the roundabout, take the exit towards Neuberg and follow the main road for approximately 4 km. At the Neuberg junction, turn right and continue straight along the road. At the Knablhof junction, turn right, then take the next left. Drive past Kohlegghof until you reach the first barrier. A free parking area is located just before the barrier.

By Train: The nearest railway stations are Eben im Pongau and Radstadt, both located on the Salzburg – Bischofshofen – Schladming – Graz railway line. Regular trains depart from Salzburg Main Station approximately every hour, with a journey time of around one hour.

Continue by Bus or Taxi: From Eben im Pongau or Radstadt, take Bus 521 to the Neuberg/Reitsteg stop in Filzmoos (journey time approx. 20–30 minutes). From there, continue with the Fidibus shuttle bus to Hotel Neubergerhof. Alternatively, taxis are available at both railway stations. Tip: Bus services are limited, so we recommend checking the current timetable in advance at www.oebb.at.

Free parking spaces after the Kohleggbauer (before the first barrier) Free parking spaces (for a limited number of cars) are available shortly before Voglerbauer. At the Filzmoos Experience Portal Filzmoos (directly in Filzmoos), opposite the petrol station, there is a public paid parking area. Please note: Parking at Hotel Neubergerhof is reserved exclusively for hotel guests!!!
