Where the Inn passes the “Zahmer Kaiser” and the “Wilder Kaiser” on its arrival in Upper Bavaria, lies the climatic health resort of Kiefersfelden. The majestic rock formations give the vacation region on the German-Austrian border its name: Kaiser-Reich.
Kiefersfelden stretches from the wide river meadows to the highest peak in the Rosenheim region, the Große Traithen (1852 m). Around 60% of the municipal area is forest, another 25% is farmland, gardens and green spaces. The Inn river, mountain streams, the wild and romantic Gießenbach gorge, natural lakes and snow-covered winter landscapes offer a wide range of opportunities for sports and leisure activities such as hiking, mountain biking, swimming, adventure rafting, canyoning, water skiing, fishing, tobogganing, ice skating and cross-country skiing.
The water power of the Kieferbach and Gießenbach streams has been used in Kiefersfelden since the 15th century. The mountain streams became the driving force behind economic development from the 17th century onwards: Their water powered the machines in the iron smelting and hammer works, the marble works and the stonemasonry workshops. In 1910, the municipality built Bavaria's first municipal hydroelectric power station on the Gießenbach. Today, six municipal and private hydroelectric power plants supply around 460 households with electricity. Private individuals and citizens' initiatives are now also investing in the use of renewable energies.
The museum in the “Blaahaus” is unique in the district. Impressive exhibits take visitors on an exciting and spectacular journey back in time. The “Kieferer Energie-Wanderweg” (Kiefer Energy Trail) starts here, bringing nature and the production of “clean” energy to life. Children can playfully try out the laws of nature at the “Hydropower learning module”.
The knights' shows are also unique. The tradition of the folk play dates back to 1618. Today, up to 100 amateur actors delight thousands of spectators every year with knight dramas on the world's only baroque revolving stage from 1833 that can still be used.
The “Innsola”, a spacious adventure swimming pool with outdoor pool, earth sauna, steam bath and plunge pool, is popular with guests and locals alike. In the “Kieferer Puppentheater”, the “boarische” Kasperl tells exciting stories from the region. The Kiefersfelden music band and the traditional costume association regularly organize music and entertainment evenings. The new commercial and leisure area “Kaiserreich Kiefersfelden” directly on the highway exit with a 200-bed hotel gives new impetus to tourism in the town and the region.
