The approach stage to Breginjski kot starts in Kobarid, a small historic town that was the scene of important events during the First World War. Here you can visit the Kobarid Museum, which is dedicated to the Isonzo Front and the Miracle of Kobarid. Before the start of the stage, we can hike up to the Italian ossuary, from where we have a wonderful view of Breginjski kot and the landscape we will walk through in the following days.
From Kobarid, the stage starts along the road towards the village of Svino, through the meadows and past a beehive to the village of Sužid, where we are greeted by the more than 500-year-old church. We continue along a macadam track, near which a narrow-gauge railway line connected Cividale del Friuli with Kobarid up until 1932. We continue on the macadam road to Kred. A little further on, you will meet the river Nadiža for the first time, which is known for its exceptional beauty and crystal-clear water flow. According to folk lore, the Nadiža is said to have healing powers.
On the way to Borjana, you can enjoy the greenery and the picturesque views of the surrounding hills. In the right wind conditions, we are sure to be greeted by a paraglider in the sky. The Stol mountain is renowned far and wide for its excellent thermals and good conditions for paragliding.
From Borjana, which is divided into the Lower, Upper and New Trail, we continue through the village and along meadows and forest paths above the village of StanovišÄe, past Sedlo to Breginj, which is the final destination of the stage.
Breginj is an idyllic village in the western part of Slovenia. It is famous for the earthquake in 1976, which destroyed most of the village. What remains is the well-preserved old village centre, where an ethnological museum collection is housed. In the old village centre, a bar and a local souvenir shop, Pod lindo, are open in high season.
Start in Kobarid on Stresova Street and head south. There is a sign on Mučeniška Street for the Gams Circular Trail. Continue between the houses, along the edge of the Kobariško blato and along the Idrija River, where you can admire the unspoilt nature of the area (Natura 2000). Follow the signs towards the village of Sužid and continue along the dirt track to the roundabout at the village of Staro selo. At the roundabout turn left for Breginj and continue along the asphalt for about 100 m, then turn left onto the macadam path for Kred. In the village of Kred, pass the church, turn left and continue in the direction of the river Nadiža. If you want to freshen up, you can go slightly off the path here. Then return to the same path and follow the signs westwards. The path slowly starts to climb. Arrive in Borjana and continue along the asphalt towards Podbela. At a sharp bend, follow the signs and turn between the houses towards Stanovišče. Continue along the forest paths, and you will have five kilometres to go until you get to Breginj. Above Borjana, we continue on the asphalt for a small part of the way. In Stanovišče, pass the upper part of the village, through the forest, and then past the Church of the Holy Cross to Breginj.
