The Musikverein is Vienna's most famous classical music centre. To experience a concert here means to get to know Vienna as a city of music in the highest quality. And music greats like the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
Millions of music lovers all over the world know the Musikverein Vienna as one of the most traditional concert halls, where artists of the very first rank perform. The building on Karlsplatz, not far from the magnificent Ringstrasse boulevard, is reminiscent of a temple, built in 1870 by Theophil Hansen in the historicising style with columns, gables and reliefs.
The Großer Musikvereinssaal, also known as the "Golden Hall ", is famous for its splendid furnishings. Apollo and the Muses are an eye-catcher on the plafond, the columns are designed as antique female figures. The acoustics of the room are as incomparable as its appearance - the sound experiences there are unique worldwide. Every year, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra's New Year's Concert is broadcast internationally from the Golden Hall on television to an audience of millions. On the remaining 364 days of the year, the Musikverein also offers concerts at the highest level. However, it is no longer exclusively a temple of classical music.
*Glass, metal, stone, wood
Since 2004 the Musikverein has had four new halls: The Glass Hall, the Metal Hall, the Stone Hall and the Wooden Hall. Here the programmatic focus is on the presentation of young artists. The soprano Anna Prohaska, for example, who is already in international demand, made her debut in the Glass Hall.
Jazz is as much at home in the Musikverein's Four New Halls as the spoken word - actors, authors and musicians read from their own works, tell stories or speak on musical themes. Young audiences also enjoy the new halls, where more than 220 children's and youth concerts enthuse young people for music.
The 45-minute guided tours in German and English, which usually take place daily except Sundays, offer the opportunity to get to know the Musikverein outside of the concert schedule.
In addition to the Musikverein, there are a good dozen other event halls in Vienna where you can also meet the good tone. First and foremost is the Wiener Konzerthaus.
