Between the 19th and 20th centuries many architectural monuments were created which are worth a visit. Admire the curved lines, ornamental patterns from flora, geometry and mythology or the building as a total work of art. In the facade designs of buildings Art Nouveau especially affects shapes of windows and their type of glazing - predominantly round and semi-circular window shapes.
During the tour you will see the the railway station, Augustastraße and Wilhelmsplatz. Don't forget the Strasbourg Passage and the Postplatz with the "Muschelminna".
Furthermore you should take a look at Marienplatz, the famous departement store and the hotel "Am Goldenen Strauß". The buildings in Joliot-Curie-Straße 4 and 5 and the new synagogue in Otto-Müller-Straße are particularly typical of the Art Nouveau era. Finally, walk through the city park to the Stadthalle and Villa Ephraim in Goethestraße.
Augustastraße takes you to Wilhelmsplatz and the Strasbourg Passage, where you will find a wide range of places to stop and shop. Here you can see the typical features of the era, too. The tour continues along Berliner Straße to Postplatz, where an art fountain called "Muschelminna" is located.
Follow the tram rails and you will arrive at Marienplatz, where you will find the famous departement store.
The departement store often served as a backdrop for international film productions. Next to the department store you can see the building of the Deutsche Bank, the Museum for Natural History and the hotel "Am Goldenen Strauß", which also belong to the 19th century era.
Continue walking through Struvestraße to the building in Joliot-Curie-Straße. Look at house numbers 4 and 5. These buildings are typical of the Art Nouveau style. Another real gem is located in Otto-Müller-Straße - the "New Synagogue", which was opened in 1911. Continue walking unhurriedly through the city park to the town hall, which stands directly at the border crossing point.
Pass the university Zittau/Görlitz, walk through the "Park des Friedens", via Dr.-Kahlbaum-Allee and Blockhausstraße you will finally reach the last stop - Goethestraße. A lot of villas from the Art Nouveau era can be found here. Villa Ephraim in house number 7, with its fascinating interiors is used as a hostel nowadays.
