Maikammer - a walk on industrial history

The small circular route begins on the market square in Maikammer. With the General Hartmann monument behind you, you go straight ahead into St.-Martiner-Straße. After only a few metres, on the left-hand side, at number 6, is the house where the brothers Anton and Franz Ullrich spent their childhood. Here their parents ran a shop selling colonial goods and cellar articles. The house was built in the early 17th century. In the (description) there is a lot of information about the house and its inhabitants at that time. Continue to the fork in the road, here turn right into Weiherstraße until it meets Hartmannstraße. Now turn left, slightly uphill, until Massastraße turns off to the right. Above the road, on the area now called Dieterwiesen, was the factory of the Ullrichsche Werke. At the end of the road, turn right twice into Schloßstraße. Here, during the factory's heyday, there were very modern workers' quarters for the time. Back on Hartmannstraße, the road goes downhill to the left. The house at Hartmannstraße 44 served as the administration building of the enamel factory (description). The next stop is house number 5, which was the first home of the brothers' parents when they moved from Diedesfeld to Maikammer (description). Anton Ullrich lived in the property with house number 7, the house of his parents-in-law, after his marriage to Margarete, where he immediately started a new colonial goods business and began selling the Klappmeter (description). From Hartmannstraße, turn left into Weinstraße Nord. The road curves, then turns right, left and right again, and on the left-hand side at the corner is an imposing villa, Villa Ullrich im Eulbusch. It was built in 1894 by Kommerzienrat Ullrich. He was the owner of the former Maikammer enamel factory (description). Now please keep left and stay on the Weinstraße Nord. After a few metres, you will see the Gründerzeit Villa Franz Ullrich on the right-hand side at number 54. Franz Ullrich married his sister-in-law's sister Eva Katharina Schmitt and had 8 children with her. With his brother Anton, he founded Emaillefabrik Maikammer (description). Now walk back a few metres to the junction Bahnhofstraße. First turn left and then right into Poststraße. On the left is St. John's Church with the striking figure of St. John on a globe. The church was built in 1913/1914 because of the enamel factory, which brought many new citizens, including some Protestants (description). At the end of Poststraße turn right into Marktstraße and here ends the small circular walk on Maikammer's industrial history.
