The ruins of Montechiaro Castle dominate the area above Prato allo Stelvio, offering a magnificent view of the Venosta Valley

The imposing ruins of Montechiaro Castle (Ruine Lichtenberg) tower above the hamlet of the same name. The complex is now in decay, but still has the power to exude a commanding charm, encapsulating the history of the noble families who once resided within its walls. The powerful Counts of Tyrol owned it until 1513, after which it passed into the hands of the Counts Khuen-Belasi. The family still owns the castle today. The ruins of Montechiaro Castle, like most of the 800 castles in South Tyrol, have a very long history.

Today, the ruins are freely accessible and guided historical-artistic tours are available with the tourist office in Prato allo Stelvio.

And how do you reach Montechiaro Castle? In Montechiaro, a hamlet of Prato allo Stelvio, there are several car parks, from which you can reach the castle in about 15-20 minutes on foot.
